SAFE PASSAGE

The sun setting on us
is rising somewhere else
on the lone sailor
whose mates spurred him on
cheered him away from the dock
with popping corks
who left his family
who asked him not to go
not to take on the ocean
singlehandly
when he had nothing to prove to them
who stand in the backwash of waves
clutching the hope
of his safe passage.
